Codeine Linctus BP is a cough syrup that contains Codeine phosphate as its active ingredient. The “BP” stands for British Pharmacopoeia, meaning the medicine is manufactured to meet official UK quality standards. The 200 mL refers only to the volume of the bottle.
How does it work?
Codeine is an opioid cough suppressant (antitussive). It works by:
- Being absorbed from the stomach and intestines into the bloodstream.
- Reaching the brain, particularly the cough center in the brainstem.
- Reducing the sensitivity of the cough reflex.
As a result, you feel less urge to cough, and coughing episodes become less frequent.
What is it used for?
It is mainly used for:
- Persistent dry coughs
- Irritating tickly coughs
- Coughs that are disturbing sleep
It is generally not ideal for coughs producing a lot of mucus, because coughing helps clear secretions from the airways.
How quickly does it work?
- Starts working: usually within 30–60 minutes
- Peak effect: about 1–2 hours
- Duration: around 4–6 hours
Possible side effects
Common side effects include:
- Drowsiness
