Merlopam, a sedative that includes lorazepam, is effective in managing symptoms of anxiety disorders such as excessive anxiety, restlessness, and sleep difficulties, including insomnia. Lorazepam works by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a natural compound that inhibits nerve cell activity in the brain, promoting feelings of calm, relaxation, and sleepiness.
Beyond its use in treating anxiety disorders, Merlopam is also commonly employed as a sedative prior to surgical procedures.
You should not use lorazepam if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, severe respiratory insufficiency, myasthenia gravis, or if you are allergic to Valium or a similar medicine.
Do not use lorazepam if you are pregnant. This medicine can cause birth defects or life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in a newborn.
